While all automakers are looking to bolster their fuel-efficient offerings, Mitsubishi is taking an extreme approach by launching an all-electric vehicle. The U.S.-spec Mitsubishi i-MiEV is slated to make its official debut at the LA Auto Show, but the automaker has already released some image of this new model.

As expected from the recently released sketches of the i-MiEV, the production model looks very much like the variant that’s current on sale overseas. The main difference is that the U.S.-spec model features larger dimensions and more amenities inside.

The U.S.-spec i-MiEV is 11.2 inches longer, 4.3 inches wider and 0.2 inches taller than the i-MiEV that’s on sale in Japan. Aside from beefier dimensions, this model gets a redesigned center stack, with updated audio and HVAC controls. Adding an EV to the model lineup will help make the brand more competitive, Nashville Mitsubishi says.

This new EV will arrive in late 2011 to take on the likes of the Nissan Leaf EV and the Chevrolet Volt. Pricing has not been released, but it’s expected to come in below $30,000, excluding government rebates.

Look for more details on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV when it debuts next week.
